Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR) has condemned the threat and sexual harassment experienced by young environmental activist Shakila Zen, who has since lodged police reports over the incidents.
SSR said Shakila (above) had received a package from an anonymous sender, on Aug 30, which contained a letter threatening an acid attack as well as a replica of a bloody severed hand.
One day later, she had received a text message via WhatsApp with sexual elements, that had a picture attached about the spread of an indecent poster containing her personal details.
“Shakila believes the harassment and the threats are coming after a video of her talking about the #Lawan rally on July 31 had gone viral on TikTok.
“Even though she is not a part of SSR, yet these threats, intimidation and sexual harassment are completely unacceptable and have crossed a line,” SSR said in a statement today.
SSR said it is a crime to use such intimidation tactics and sexual harassment targeted towards women activists and this should especially be condemned by the public.
“We look upon this matter seriously and it can become a dangerous norm if we let this continue,” they said, adding that they stand in solidarity with Shakila.
Shakila has since lodged two police reports over the incidents.
Klang Utara deputy district police chief Mohd Khairi Shafie told Malaysiakini that the case is currently being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code.
Section 507 deals with criminal intimidation by anonymous communication.
In a separate statement, the Youth Cluster of the CSO Platform for Reform strongly condemned any sort of threat, intimidation or sexual harassment from any irresponsible parties towards young activists.
“The continuous harassment and threats towards Shakila and other activists, who are only using their freedom of speech to voice their opinions as enshrined in the Federal Constitution, need to be stopped immediately.
“We need to stand together to fight against intimidation,” the group said.
